Race Engineering

This site is for all of you including myself who is missing an online resource for your work as an race-engineer, driver coach or race-driver. Like most of you who have happen to land here i´m extremely competitive.
What I was missing was a quality resource that I can depend upon. I have gathered a vast amount of knowledge, documents and insights into the beautiful world we call Motorsport and I have decided to put some of it online in different forms.
Many people in our business wants to seem very smart and often over complicates things or believe in non-scientific approaches. I will take the practical point of view and get you the real value and real knowledge that will work for you. As a MSc in Mechanical Engineering I connected the dots with my racing experience, racing driver turned driver coach and now for over 10 years working and winning in WTCC (World touring car championship) and STCC (Swedish touring car championship) as a professional race-engineer.

Who we are

Few people have been a racing driver, driver coach, and race-engineer with a Dual MSc. in Mechanical Engineering and International Project Management. Most literature is from one of those perspectives. The aim is to combine these in a practical and value-adding material.

What is race Engineering?

Engineering is application of knowledge. In the form of science, mathematics, and empirical evidence, innovation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, processes, and organizations. The discipline of engineering encompasses a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application.
Race engineering is applying the above engineering skill set on Motorsport. Motorsport or racing is a competitive sport in which you race cars or motorcycles or other vehicles either by time (Rally, Time trial, and usually qualification) or/and over a certain distance (Formula 1, WTCR, and commonly in heat racing or main race.). The aim is to win by optimizing vehicle and surrounding conditions to maximize performance during the competition.
Like other engineering disciplines, a sound scientific approach to maximize the potential, is good practice. Whereby a engineering degree is usually the preferred prerequisites for getting an engineering job in Motorsport. But a race car driving background and/or people and team management is also very important to gain success. If you would like to be a race engineer at Honda, Ferrari, Mclaren, Williams or any other team and manufacturer, the race engineer is usually considered a role where you need several years of experience. If you work for a smaller team the Race Engineer would also be doing everything from data analysis, data download, calibration of systems and parameters to calculating fuel, setting tire pressures and so on. Race Engineering in all top categories of Motorsport like NASCAR, MotoGP, Formula 1, WTCR, Touring cars and they are usually located in the pit perch at the pit wall. They communicate with the driver thru an intercom system and also with the rest of team like first mechanic, Team boss, tire technicians and support engineers. On the screens in front of them, its common to have a live feed of the TV broadcast, live feed from a timing system, strategy document or program, and also sometimes live performance data from the vehicle.
When the vehicle isn’t running on the track the race engineer is in the trailer or in a secluded section of the pit-garage with the driver, analyzing data, getting feedback from the driver and planning for the upcoming session. Common work tasks would be tires, fuel, setup changes, component evaluation, and communicating strategies and changes to the rest of the team.
